Day 20, Quatern:
Why Did the Ring-Necked Pheasant Cross the Road
Common pheasant, a feast of kings
often born in a chicken’s nest,
mistakes them for his own proud kind
or himself for the humbler bird.
No escaping destiny’s grasp,
common pheasant. A feast of kings
undeterred by the pheasant hen’s
pitiful attempt at a nest:
A few feathers plucked from her breast
in a lazily scratched out ditch.
Common pheasant, a feast of kings
plopped in a prairie chicken’s clutch
longs forever for the wrong mate,
from the other side of the road.
So that’s why he
crosses over,
common pheasant, a feast of kings.
