Day 28, The Thing About Woodpeckers

Day 28, The Thing About Woodpeckers

Many a day on a walk in the woods,
I’d hear your knock, inviting me in.
I’d scan the trees for a glimpse of distant motion,
that jackhammer crack on wood.

Those days were good:
satisfying when you let me in.
Unknown to you, we’d share the moment
before you shattered the silence of the wood.

Did I grow greedy, try too hard?
I put out food in winter, invited you in.
With that, my yard was overrun.
And — how had I forgotten —my house is made of wood.
