Day 9, white-breasted
nuthatch at odds with the vertical
you turn the bird’s-eye view
on its head
or tail depending
how you look at it
estranged from the vertical
your upside-down, sideways creep
reveals the underside of the leaf
reaps the greater harvest
from the lesser seen
like those of us
who as awkward kids
learned to fill our hearts and days
with the cast-off, the rejected
the odd geniuses with their quirks
and plumes of brilliance
and who now with the compounded
hindsight of decades wouldn’t trade the vantage
of a solitary hackneyed nuthatch
for a flock of straight-faced robins
