Day 5, Egg-laying
habits of the bobwhite quail, or Ferris Bobwhite’s Day Off
Livingston describes
an ovarian clock so wound
as to tick out one each morning
and one on each successive day
at a successively later hour
advancing toward the dark
until, one night, evening breached
the hen takes a day to recover
rewinds the clock, resets the start
and resumes the morning lay
what does she think
if think she does
of that instinctive holiday
if it were me, breeding to regimen,
I’d want combat pay
Some of the titles of these poems are just hilarious.
